POSITION SUMMARY:

 

The Specialty Pharmacy Technician is responsible for the overall coordination and processing of patient medication orders, to include order intake within regulatory boundaries, customer service coordination, and pharmacy technician duties as defined by policy and regulation and while under the supervision of a pharmacist.

 

Responsibilities

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Working under the supervision of a pharmacist to provide patient care ensuring the shortest path to therapy by following both program and regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrates high customer service as a liaison between prescriber, pharmacy operations, and third-party insurance. Emphasis on prior authorization and medical necessity fulfillment along with other programs that may be available to assist patient care.
  • Perform data entry of new and refill prescription orders routing to Pharmacist Verification and Fulfillment.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations including but not limited to HIPAA compliance.
  • Answer questions and requests with empathy, responding to and referring inquiries to the Pharmacist when necessary.
  • Communicate as necessary with patients to determine general health status, medication compliance, medication and supply inventory, and overall coordination of care and service (custom assessment in software system) as applicable.
  • Report Adverse Events (AE) and Product Quality Complaints (PQC) based on client requirements.
  • Perform patient level benefits verifications as applicable for all pharmacy benefits plans.
  • Complete prior authorization templates per payer requirements to ensure medication orders will be covered by insurance plans.
  • Evaluate all completed prior authorizations to ensure that the appropriate information has been obtained to allow for reimbursement as well as compliance with applicable standards and regulations.
  • Processing of prior authorization responses and submitting appeals if requested by patient/prescriber.
  • Communicate as necessary with patients to determine general health status, medication compliance, medication and supply inventory, and overall coordination of care and service (custom assessment in software system) as applicable.
  • Make outbound calls to prescribers, patients, and insurance companies.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Three (3) year of previous specialty pharmacy technician experience
  • One (1) year of experience providing customer service to internal and external customers, including meeting quality standards for services
  • Registered and licensed pharmacy technician by the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy in good standing

 

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Completion of a pharmacy technician training program approved by the Indiana & Florida Board of Pharmacy
  • Nationally certified through the PTCB or another approved certifying agency
  • Knowledge of insurance procedures
